The Upstream Team 

The Upstream Team is a growing network of specialists, each pursuing their own projects, research and innovations, who come together to collaborate on funded projects driven by a shared commitment to improving outcomes for children and young people.

Our work focuses on early identification, inclusion and prevention, particularly where existing systems and solutions are failing to meet children's needs.

Through initiatives such as UKRI's Contracts for Innovation (CfI), we bring together expertise to develop and evaluate innovative, practical solutions that:

• Enable earlier, fairer and more reliable identification of special educational needs (SEN), particularly where existing solutions underperform or do not exist.

• Reignite the importance of play and increase access to high-quality, real-world play experiences that support children's learning, development, wellbeing and inclusion.

Many of us bring lived experience of neurodivergence, either personally or as parents, alongside our professional expertise.

We work independently, but come together when our combined expertise can make a greater difference.

Our shared motivation is to change systems, rather than expect children to change to fit them.
