The Upstream Team is making waves in the fields of literacy, language and communication, challenging conventional approaches to identifying and addressing children's needs and developing innovative solutions that remove barriers before they become entrenched.

We believe that the purpose of a system is what it does, not what it claims to do. That's why we're focused on changing outcomes for children, rather than simply creating more assessments, interventions or programmes.

Through Dys-Code®, we're re-routing dyslexia identification and support by developing ways to identify dyslexia risk from as young as three years old, understand why children experience difficulties with reading and spelling, and identify what they need next. Our work focuses on earlier identification, deeper analysis and giving educators and families the knowledge to respond effectively.

Through MySpeekie®, we're re-routing communication for non-speaking children, including those who cannot yet read or spell. Our pioneering one-screen augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) technology uses Phonemies®, speech sound characters designed to make the sounds of spoken language accessible to children. Rather than restricting children to preselected words, pictures or phrases, MySpeekie® enables them to generate their own messages and have them spoken aloud.

Both developments reflect our commitment to understanding what children can do, identifying what is getting in their way and removing unnecessary barriers to independence.
